I have a great relationship with many of my students - we have a laugh together. Singing can be much too serious and it's important to have fun, and maybe be a bit rude and irreverent as well. Here's a great set of lyrics that my student Cecilia White (who is currently at university) sent me today for my amusement. I thought I'd share them with you. They do contain some strong language!
Tune: Tannenbaum - otherwise known as the Red Flag. I'm sure you all know it and can sing along raucously. Enjoy it!
The Working class can kiss my ass,
I've got an MP's job at last,
And though I've got a job to do,
I spend my weeks ignoring you,
Then raise the top up fees so high
you'll pay them till the day you die,
While tories baulk and libdems sneer,
We'll shaft a lot of students here
We'll privatise the students halls,
We'll sell their carpets and their walls,
And when their toilets over-run
We'll charge them for the damage done,
Then raise the top up fees so high
you'll pay them till the day you die,
While tories baulk and libdems sneer,
We'll shaft a lot of students here
Expand accessibility,
But ne'er again educate for free,
Pay staff a derisory wage
And then ignore the people's rage
Then raise the top up fees so high
you'll pay them till the day you die,
While tories baulk and libdems sneer,
We'll shaft a lot of students here
George bush called to drop the bombs
And beckoned Tony Blair along
With balderdash of WMD's
We'll force Iraq to fain be free
Then raise the top up fees so high
you'll pay them till the day you die,
While tories baulk and libdems sneer,
We'll shaft a lot of students here
It suits today the weak and base
Whose minds are fixed on Cabinet place
To cringe before Saint Tony's crown
And pull all of our principles down
Then raise the top up fees so high
you'll pay them till the day you die,
While tories baulk and libdems sneer,
We'll shaft a lot of students here
